Labor in the New Energy Economy
The Labor in the New Energy Economy (LNEE) project helps labor leaders build strategies to promote workers’ interests as our society moves away from the polluting technologies of the past. The labor movement brings important skills to an economy based on wind, solar, biomass, cleaner-burning coal and carbon capture. As the only organized voice representing America’s workers, it also has a vital role in ensuring that jobs in the new energy economy are well-paid and safe.
National and international union leaders strive to use their influence to win policies that work for workers, while local officers and stewards have an opportunity to promote clean, worker-friendly energy on the shop floor. The LNEE project fosters innovative strategies at all levels and works to coordinate efforts regionally in order to realize America’s potential as an innovative energy leader with the world’s highest standard of living.
On May 18, 2009, we hosted the Ohio Conference on Labor in the New Energy Economy, bringing together over 100 union leaders and activists to support the emergence of a clean energy, good jobs economy in that state. On January 8, 2008, we released the report IGCC with Carbon Capture and Storage: Opportunities and Challenges for Labor. This report from COWS that suggests that organized labor may stand to gain by promoting the deployment of a new technology in the utility industry. Click here to download the full report.
In October 2007 we hosted the Midwest Conference on Labor in the New Energy Economy. This innovative event brought together nearly 150 union activists and allies to build strategies for promoting strong unions and clean energy in the 21st century.
